A renewed light shining in the sky

The GLOBANA Airport Hotel at Leipzig/Halle Airport received a new, energy-efficient lighting solution for its highly visible rooftop lettering. hansen supported NEL GmbH with individually manufactured LED profiles.

The project

The existing rooftop signage at the GLOBANA Airport Hotel had become outdated, and the neon lighting was increasingly unreliable. As part of the refurbishment, the lighting colour was also to be changed from blue to a subtly illuminated grey.

NEL GmbH from Leipzig was commissioned with the lighting design for the three approximately two-metre-high “HOTEL” signs.

The right lighting solution

Instead of completely rebuilding the well-preserved letters, the decision was made to convert them to modern LED technology. This allowed the existing signage to be retained while also reducing energy consumption.

For the external illuminated contours, the choice fell on hansen swing~light. The flexible, weather-resistant light profile is particularly suitable for customised contours and is individually manufactured and pre-assembled by hansen.

To assess the lighting effect, NEL initially produced samples and presented them to the hotel. The decision was made in favour of cool white at 6500 Kelvin, providing excellent visibility both during the day and at night.

The implementation

As no original drawings or documentation of the existing lettering were available, all three “HOTEL” signs first had to be completely remeasured. Based on these measurements, the LED configuration, individual profile lengths and required control technology were planned by hansen.

Following the order, production began immediately. The individually pre-assembled light profiles were delivered on schedule in summer 2022 and subsequently installed on site by NEL.

The three converter boxes were also designed specifically for the project and installed in easily accessible positions on the rear of the respective signs.

The result

The GLOBANA Airport Hotel is once again clearly visible from a distance, shining in a new light. The existing rooftop signage was sustainably upgraded without having to completely replace the well-preserved letters.

The new appearance is impressive both from the ground and from the air.
